Hello again everyone! 😊👋
It’s been 2 weeks since I wrote something, which is longer than usual, but you know… vacation happened. So now I can say I’ve been to Legoland (Denmark) as an adult as well as a kid. Fun! 😁
I’ve been doing mostly reviews in the past posts, but now it’s time for an opinion and I would love your thoughts on this as well.
But yeah, back to the topic, I’m sure you’ve all heard the “you do you” that WE keep saying to everyone that expresses some sort of insecurity about how to use their bullet journal. We also say very often that “All you need is a notebook and a pen!” to anyone that spends waaaaaay to much before they even begin journaling.
I know this is redundant and it has been said a lot of times, but I just want to get it out of the way for anyone wondering:
- You DON’T need to be good at drawing to do Bullet Journaling
- You DON’T need a lot of fancy supplies to do Bullet Journaling
- You DON’T need to do what everyone else is doing to do Bullet Journaling
- You DON’T need an Instagram account to do Bullet Journaling
- Not PERFECT is OK!
That being said… why do we have to keep telling people this? Why isn’t it obvious? Oh… I don’t know… maybe because I’m saying don’t buy all this stuff but look at me, how happy I am with it!!
So I get it! I do. People who see what others do and want the possibility to do the same. Of course I get it. I’ve said it before and I say it again… I LOVE this kind of supplies and can’t get enough. And I would probably be in heaven if I could work at a place that had them. I would also be broke, but that’s another story. Or is it? 🤔
For me, the only “bad” (not really, but sort of 😝) thing is when you buy things you don’t use or you can’t really afford. I try (I’m not perfect 😅 ) to give a use to everything I have and I try to give away what I don’t use so someone can. So yeah… by all means… if you want to and can, go ahead and GO NUTS! Buy the perfect notebook, buy the nice pens and markers, get the stencils and bookcovers you want… whatever floats your boat. 😄👍
But for you that only are looking for a way to get organized, don’t feel all that artsy and/or are on a tight budget… PLEASE give it a shot anyway before getting discouraged. I’m the first to share spreads as I do them because I take inspiration from a lot of people and I feel I want to give the same back, but it’s meant as that, inspiration. Not “Look at me, you can’t do this!” Every time I read someone feeling that way it makes me sad. 😢
A tip though, if you want to make “complicated spreads” is try to “look beyond the fancy drawings and colors”. Normally, the layout of the spread is quite simple and you can copy that and then do whatever you want to “decorate” it (If you want to. If not, make it plain). Stickers and washitape are a great way to do that too.
Take a close look at these weekly spreads (these are the ones I use):
Now picture these spreads without the drawings. They are super simple! The last one is also a good example that one pen and one marker is more than enough. I love how the black and turquoise look together and this is something anyone can do. 😉
Another thing that bothers me a little is the HYPE some items get. It’s like Tombows are the only brushpens out there that are worth something or that the Leuchtturm1917 is the only valid choice for “real” bullet journaling. Not always, but you can get that feeling and for a newbie I’m pretty sure that’s how it looks like sometimes. And we are at fault for that.
Don’t get me wrong, I love these products and I have them, but they are not necessarily the best fit for everyone. The LT1917 is not better than other journals (It’s not my everyday BuJo for instance) and the Tombows have great competition as well. For now, the only reason I got the whole set is becuase I love the variety of colors. 😝
So yeah, I like the saying “YOU, do YOU” because bullet journal is all about what you want it to be. You don’t need anything, you don’t have to do things a certain way and really people… HAVE FUN WITH IT!
I would recommend to do some research and pick what you think you will use. And leave room for improvement (in your head) so you don’t scrap something right away just because it’s not perfect. Embrace errors (they SOOOOOO will happen 😂 ) and MOVE ON!
I’m setting up my new journal from september, and on the first two pages I already made mistakes that needed fixing. I have to say I was really disappointed right away, but then… “ah well, what are you going to do? Throw a brand new notebook because of some wrong numbers?” Nope! Just laugh at it and again, MOVE ON.
And again (yes, these are on most my posts 😁), here is a list of things I use. Yes they are affiliate links so I get a commission if you buy something which will help me fund the supplies that I use in my reviews, but the links don’t cost you a thing and they give you an opportunity to have a look at some of things you might find interesting. 😋
